BIOGRAPHY
Nadia Marie Johnson is a second-year doctoral student in the Department of Communication at the »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµ. Her research and teaching interests include Black studies, critical media and cultural studies, and digital media studies coupled with women's, gender, and sexuality studies. Nadia Marie is particularly interested in Black people's media representation and how race- and gender-based discriminatory practices impact our perceptions and understanding of Blackness. Her research also centers on how these media representations affect Black folks' livelihoods, ranging from their socioeconomic status to social capital. Nadia Marie is currently working on two project areas: the Black college impact and new implications for contemporary Hip Hop studies. Ultimately, she draws inspiration from her life experiences to shape her research and to bring a unique approach to topics relative to the field of communication.
Nadia Marie earned a B.A. in Communication Arts ('22) from Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), Charlotte, North Carolina's only Historically Black College and University (HBCU). She went on to earn her M.A. in Communication with a Graduate Certificate in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies ('24) from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Aside from her studies, Nadia Marie has served in various student leadership roles and is the founder of two active student support groups at JCSU, Bullooming and the Transfer Student Association. Nadia Marie is a proud member of the first Black sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she remains committed to local and global service, and Lambda Pi Eta, exhibiting her passion for communication scholarship.
