The Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Special Education prepares researchers, teacher educators, and educational leaders committed to advancing equity and improving outcomes for learners with disabilities. This cohort-based program emphasizes scholarship, respect for diversity, effective teaching, and strong university–school partnerships, with a focus on urban special education and special education policy. Students are mentored individually while also engaging collaboratively with peers to develop the skills needed to conduct impactful research and lead systemic improvement.

What you will learn

Students gain advanced expertise in special education theory, policy, and research methods, with an emphasis on urban contexts and systems-level collaboration. Through coursework, mentoring, and applied scholarly experiences, they learn to design and conduct research, contribute to teacher preparation, and influence policy and practice. The program cultivates the ability to lead partnerships, analyze and support educational systems, and advance inclusive, research-informed approaches to special education.

What to Expect
