MAT in Elementary Education

Master of Arts in Teacing in Elementary Education

USF’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Elementary Education is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree outside of education and want to become certified K–6 teachers. This state-approved program leads to certification in Elementary Education K–6 with embedded ESOL and Reading Endorsements. Through coursework and extensive clinical experiences, students learn to create inclusive, engaging, and high-impact learning environments for all elementary learners.

What you will learn

In this program, students learn to design effective instruction, use research-based strategies, and create inclusive, engaging classrooms for diverse K–6 learners. You’ll develop strong content knowledge, assessment skills, and the ability to integrate technology, differentiate instruction, and foster positive learning environments. Graduates also build professional dispositions grounded in reflection, ethics, fairness, and cultural responsiveness.

Career Opportunites

Graduates of the MAT in Elementary Education are prepared for roles such as:

  • Elementary Classroom Teacher (K–6)
  • ESOL Teacher (with endorsement)
  • Reading Teacher/Interventionist (with endorsement)
  • Instructional Support or Academic Intervention roles
  • Curriculum or Grade-Level Team Lead
  • Future instructional coach or literacy coach (with experience)

What to Expect

Students progress through daytime coursework paired with clinical experiences in partnership schools, including a part-time practicum and full-time internship. You’ll work closely with mentor teachers and university supervisors, engage in summer place-based learning in community sites like museums and libraries, and complete fieldwork across both primary (K–2) and intermediate (3–5) classrooms. The program leads to K–6 certification plus ESOL and Reading Endorsements, with all fieldwork completed within the designated service area.
