Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education

USF’s Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education prepares future educators to teach mathematics in middle and high schools. The program combines educational theory, teaching methods, and practical classroom experience to equip graduates with the tools to meet the needs of diverse learners. Students engage in coursework that emphasizes both subject mastery and strategies for fostering problem-solving and critical thinking. Upon graduation, students are well-prepared to take the Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FTCE) and pursue careers as effective, reflective, and caring mathematics educators.

 

Middle School Mathematics (Grades 5-9) Concentration  

As part of the STEM Middle School Residency Program, this concentration offers extensive hands-on experience in partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools. Students complete more than 1,200 hours of clinical experiences, including two semester-long practica and a yearlong internship, working side-by-side with experienced teachers. Graduates are eligible for Florida Department of Education certification in mathematics (grades 5–9).

Mathematics Education (Grades 6–12) Concentration

This concentration focuses on preparing teachers for both middle and high school classrooms, offering the flexibility to teach a wide range of math courses. Students develop a deep understanding of mathematics content alongside proven instructional methods, ensuring they can engage learners at multiple levels. Graduates are ready to earn certification and pursue careers teaching mathematics across grades 6–12.
