Bachelor of Science in Physical Education

Offered on USF's Tampa Campus

USF’s Bachelor of Science in Physical Education prepares students for K–12 teaching certification through comprehensive study in kinesiology, skill development, and instructional design. This full-time hybrid program blends coursework with hands-on field experiences to help students become effective, knowledgeable, and ethical educators. Graduates are eligible for Florida teacher certification with embedded ESOL and Reading endorsements upon completion of all program requirements.

What you will learn

Students gain the knowledge and skills to promote physical literacy, health, and fitness across K–12 populations. You’ll learn to design and deliver developmentally appropriate lessons, apply effective instructional strategies, and adapt teaching for diverse learners. The curriculum integrates technology, research, and real-world experiences to prepare graduates as reflective and confident physical education professionals.

What to expect

This 72-credit hour hybrid program combines theory with extensive hands-on learning through clinical placements and internships. Students gain real-world experience teaching in local schools and USF’s on-campus elementary homeschool PE program. Each semester builds on the last through fieldwork, methods courses, and a full-semester internship—helping students bridge theory and practice while developing strong professional readiness.

Student Spotlight: Merritt Smith

At the start of her studies at USF, Merritt Smith overcame obstacles in earning her state of Florida teaching certification. Today, she is a soon-to-be graduate of USF’s Physical Education program who stands out amongst her peers by being recognized as the university’s 2019-20 Outstanding Intern of the Year.
