Commitment to Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs)

The Patel College of Global Sustainability (PCGS) proudly welcomes Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. RPCVs bring invaluable international, community-based experience that enriches classroom learning, strengthens campus engagement, and positively impacts the Tampa Bay community.

Graduate Degree Options at PCGS

PCGS offers three graduate degrees, all designed to prepare students for leadership in sustainability and resilience fields:

Master of Arts (MA) in Global Sustainability

Offers a multidisciplinary foundation integrating environmental, economic, and social dimensions of global sustainability.

Concentrations (2):
  • Climate Mitigation & Adaptation
  • Sustainability Policy

Master of Science (MS) in Global Sustainability

Provides a science- and systems-focused approach emphasizing applied problem-solving and technical training.

Concentrations (3):
  • Food Sustainability & Security
  • Sustainable Energy
  • Water Sustainability

Master of Science (MS) in Sustainability Management (MSSM)

A management- and strategy-focused degree integrating business, leadership, and sustainability innovation designed for students pursuing advanced roles in organizational sustainability.

All three degrees are available in online, on-campus, or blended formats, offering flexibility while maintaining rigorous academic standards and opportunities for applied learning.

Why the PCGS–Coverdell Partnership Is a Strong Fit for RPCVs

RPCVs admitted as Coverdell Fellows can pursue any of the six PCGS academic pathways (three degrees, five MA/MS concentrations, plus the MSSM degree). Students engage directly with community partners, local organizations, and regional agencies, and PCGS graduates have a strong record of professional success across government, nonprofit, and private sectors.

Note: Coverdell Fellows must be on-campus students to receive the fellowship, but may take a combination of in-person or online courses as needed.

Admission and Application Requirements:

Coverdell applicants follow the standard PCGS graduate admissions process and submit the following additional materials:

Application Process

  1. Submit the Patel College of Global Sustainability Graduate Application, including the Coverdell essay (see Essay Requirements). 
  2. Upload a Description of Service (DOS) as part of the application. 
  3. Eligible applicants invited for interviews will meet with the PCGS selection panel during the Fall semester. 
  4. The Dean appoints Coverdell Fellows for the following Spring/Fall terms.

Questions & Answers for Coverdell Applicants:

Q: Can I complete my capstone internship overseas?
A:  
No.  Coverdell Fellows are required to complete their capstone internship with an underserved  American community, per Peace Corps program requirements. ().

Q:  Can I take the Global Sustainability master’s program online as a Coverdell Fellow?
A:  The program requires Coverdell Fellows to take the MA or MS program on the USF Tampa campus, but you may take any selection of courses that are offered in-class or online as needed. 

Q:  When are Coverdell Fellows appointed?
A:  Coverdell Fellow interviews and appointments occur during the Fall semester for the next Spring/Fall term.

Q:  Does every student who applies and is eligible receive a Coverdell Appointment?
A:  No. The Coverdell Fellow application and appointment process is competitive;

Q: Is admission competitive? 
A: Yes. Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee a Coverdell Fellowship appointment.
